The National and Historical Park of Troia

On September 30, 1996, the Turkish government declared the site of Troia and the immediate surroundings a National Historical Park. Within an area of some 136 km2, the park includes an impressive number of archaeological sites dating from the Neolithic period through recent times (memorials to the many lives lost in the Battle of Gallipoli in 1915). No less important than the cultural heritage is the natural heritage, for modern agriculture is increasingly taking its toll. The last zones preserving ecology relatively untouched by human progress are now under threat. A master plan for the park aims to protect both cultural and natural legacies. We must preserve the landscape of Homer so that coming generations can fully grasp the literary heritage through the message of the countryside.
